Munich-based mobility provider Sono Motors announced an upgrade to the battery of its upcoming Sion vehicle. Sono opted for a more powerful 54 kWh battery for the Sion SEV (Solar Electric Vehicle). Sono Motors was established in 2016 with a mission to realize a mobile system in which each car is solar, shared and independent of fossil fuels. They are developing forward-looking electric vehicles suitable for daily use, with integrated solar cells. Since unveiling the Sion SEV in 2017, the company has received more than 13,000 down payment bookings. This number shows the growing interest and commitment in environmental protection. According to Sono Motors, the new battery provides Sion with a capacity of 54 kWh. It will extend the vehicle's total range by up to 305 kilometers and increase the maximum charging power by up to 75 kilowatts. The extra range provided by Sion solar panels remains unchanged, at an average of 112 kilometers per week (245 kilometers per week at peak times). The new LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery does not use cobalt, nickel and manganese at all. Sono Motors also promise a longer battery life for the Sion SEV, as the new battery should be able to extend the life to 3,000 cycles or up to 900,000 kilometers Climate protection remains the most important in the entire production process, as it does in every aspect of Sono’s operations. Therefore, as part of this commitment, the company claims that they will offset all unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions during the production process by supporting certified climate protection projects. Sion is scheduled to be produced in the first half of 2023. Sion will be produced at the former SAAB plant in Trollhätten, Sweden, in cooperation with its partner NEVS. It is estimated that the total production in seven years will reach 257,000 vehicles. Sono Sion price: €25,500
